Small (2.5–4.0 mm), called ant beetles for their distinctive body form of large square or triangular head on narrow neck, slim heart-shaped pronotum and prominent rounded shoulders to the long-oval non-striate elytra. Often prettily marked with reddish spots or bars across the dark background. Legs long, slim, tarsi 5–5–4. Antennae short but slim, filiform, or very gently and slightly clubbed. Scavengers in various plant materials, often found running actively on bare soil, or under ground-cover herbage, in compost, grass cuttings or on flowers. The distinctive Notoxus monoceros has a stout horn projecting over the head from the front edge of the pronotum. Identification: Joy (1932), Buck (1954), Telnov (2010).
